Review: Kat Von D Light & Shade Contour Palette

Today I am reviewing the Kat Von D Shade & Light Eye Contour Palette.  Everybody loves a good contouring palette and the hunt for a good one continues.   Kat Von D Shade & Light Contour Palette- Main   If you don't know what "contouring" of the eye means I'll tell you, It's the process of adding depth, dimension, and shape to the eyes using color.   [bctt tweet="Contouring of the eye is the process of adding depth, dimension, and shape to the eyes using color." username="natoyaammon"]   The Kat Von D Shade & Light Eye Contour Palette retails for approximately $62cdn and is an all-matte palette with mostly neutral shades.   It comes in a black cardboard structured box which that is sturdier than it looks which is a plus.   The box contains a mirror big enough to do your eyes but not necessarily your face especially if your holding it in your hands. It does have a magnetic closure so it will stay closed.       Kat Von D Light Shade Palette       Kat Von D Light Shade Palette Back of Pkg.png   What I love about the packaging and leaflet inside is the labeling of the shades of shadow, the "how to" look descriptions and actual contour diagrams that show you how to use the eye shadows just in case you have no idea what to do or are a little intimidated by all the shadows. Some looks in this palette would go great with the Kat Von D Everlasting Lipstick in Vampira I did a review on,  read about it here .   [bctt tweet="The Kat Von D Shade & Light Eye Contour Palette has a How To diagram that shows you what to do." username="natoyaammon"]   The Kat Von D Shade & Light Eye Contour Palette is arranged into 3 quads:  Neutral, Cool & Warm.  Each quad has 1 generously large base shadow color and 3 smaller shadows that can be used to contour, define and highlight the eye for a total of 10 matte and 2 satin shadows.  The shadow names are labelled on the back of the palette package.  It would have been nice to have the names actually written underneath the eye shadows so you could determine faster what color you are using instead of always having to look on the back of the package.   Kat Von D Shade & Light Palette   Here is a closer look at the colours of the Kat Von D Shade & Light Eye Contour Palette.  All of the contour colors begin with the letter ‘S’ = "shade" and all of the highlight colors begin with the letter  ‘L’ = "light".   Neutral Quad KatVonD Shade & Light Neutral   Cool Quad KatVonD Shade & Light Cool   Warm Quad KatVonD Shade & Light Warm   Though most of the colors are wearable some aren't necessarily right for my chocolate complexion. The shadows are finely-milled which makes them feel silky in texture but that also makes them a bit powdery and dusty too.  The light powdery texture also makes some shades not as pigmented as I would like which makes them sheer and a bit patchy to blend out.  It is advisable to use a primer with this palette as it serves as a pigment filler with a bit of texture for a better surface to work with that will blend better.   PROS:
  •    not tested on animals
  •    fragrance free
  •    sturdy packaging
  •    good number of neutral shades
  •    great for neutral day looks and dramatic smokey eyes
  •    generous portions of eye shadow color in palette
  CONS:
  • pricey
  • shadows are very powdery so you will finish the product faster
  • alot of fallout
  • takes time to build color and blend
  • not all of the colors are made for people with darker complexion, a bit ashy
  • shax color not as jet black as it looks
There you have it my review of the Kat Von D Shade & Light Eye Contour PaletteI do like the style and packaging of the palette.  Alot of thought was put into the design and layout of the product.  It is a bit pricey at $62  but we know part of that is the brand name.  I think where the product could improve is on the quality of the shadow.  A denser product vs a light and powdery one would make the product last a bit long especially for the price.   Over to you,  Would you try out the Kat Von D Shade & Light Eye Contour Palette? Have you tried this palette before?  What did you think?  What do you use to contour and highlight your eyes? Let me know what you think leave a comment below. 1. I never follow the instructions on the eye shadow…I kinda do my own thing LOL! However, I do really like these colors, as I use very similar ones every day. You’re correct…the very light shades don’t work on darker skin like mine, but the others do really well

  2. This is a really nice eye palette. I love that each section is divided into a bases shade, with 3 other shades. It looks like it would be fun to play around and experiment with.

  3. I am loving the colors in these palettes! I love Kat Von D and I have to say, I never saw any products of her this light before, which is what I usually wear.

  4. This was helpful! I will buy this because I think it is perfect for natural looks for school. Maybe it is a bit pricey but considering other kat von d products that I used and love, I am pretty sure this is good too.

  5. This is a great review. I’m really at a loss when it comes to contouring anything. I have half a dozen contouring palettes and don’t know what to do with them. This palette is actually one that was given to me. I have to start watching tutorials and give it a try.
